Fibre optic cabling for backbones, risers and campus links
We stock OS2 single-mode and OM3 and OM4 multimode Fibre Optic Cable in tight buffered, loose tube and armoured constructions, along with the 19 inch patch panels, wall boxes, pigtails and patchcords needed to present it at each end. LC, SC, ST and FC connector options are available throughout.
Single-mode or multimode?
OS2 single-mode supports 10 Gb/s and beyond over kilometres and is the safe choice for inter-building links. OM3 and OM4 multimode use cheaper VCSEL optics and are ideal for links inside a building up to 300 to 550 m at 10 Gb/s. If you are unsure, call us with the run lengths and the switch optics you plan to use.
Fusion splicers, cleavers, cleaning kits and consumables are in our fibre tools section, and Fibre Testers cover everything from visual fault locators to Tier 1 certification.
Fibre Optic Network Cabling FAQs
Single-mode or multimode: which do I need?
OS2 single-mode for any link between buildings, over 300 m, or where you want to future-proof. OM4 multimode for in-building links under about 400 m at 10 Gb/s where cheaper optics matter. Read our fibre cable guide.
How many cores should I run?
Each duplex link uses two cores. Run at least double what you need today: 8 or 12 cores between floors, 12 to 24 cores between buildings. The cable is cheap compared with the installation.
Can I terminate fibre without a fusion splicer?
Yes, with cold cure or pre-polished field-fit connectors from our fibre connectors range. For higher core counts and lower loss, fusion splicing pigtails into a patch panel is the standard method, and we sell and hire splicers.
