PoE switches carry Power over Ethernet on some or all of their ports, sending power and data down the same copper cable to devices such as CCTV cameras, access points and IP phones without a separate power supply. This range is supplied by TP-Link.
What to look for
- Port count from 8 up to 48 ports, and how many of those ports are PoE+ rather than data only
- Desktop switches for smaller installs or comms cupboards, or rackmount switches for a 19 inch cabinet
- Speed, from 10/100Mbps up to Gigabit, with some models adding 10GE uplinks or SFP fibre slots for the backbone connection
- Din rail or wall mounting where a switch needs to sit outside a standard cabinet

PoE Switches FAQs
How many PoE ports do I need?
Count the PoE powered devices you plan to connect, such as cameras or access points, and choose a switch where the number of PoE+ ports covers that count plus any planned expansion, since not every port on every switch is PoE enabled.
Should I choose a desktop or rackmount PoE switch?
Desktop PoE switches suit small sites or comms cupboards without a cabinet, while rackmount PoE switches fit a standard 19 inch cabinet alongside patch panels and other rack equipment.
What does PoE+ mean compared to standard PoE?
PoE+ delivers more power per port than the original PoE standard, enough for higher draw devices such as pan tilt zoom cameras or dual band access points. Check the power requirement of the device against the switch’s PoE+ port rating before ordering.
